Ali Vs Quarry-Oct 26th, 1970 Atlanta
Muhammad Ali had not been able to fight for more than 3 years because of his legal troubles. Before he was on his hiatus he was dominating each fighter he faced. He was so much faster and smarter in the ring then his opponents that it looked like child's play. Ali was 29-0 when he came back to the ring to fight Jerry Quarry. Quarry was no easy first fight, and in fact many predicted he would beat Ali. Quarry was a tough fighter who was out pointed in a tough decision to Jimmy Ellis for the World Title 2 years earlier. Quarry had a good left hook and great chin and was willing to fight anyone. Quarry was 37-4-4 going into this contest. Everyone was anxious to see if Ali still had the speed and incredible skills that he had before his semi retirement. Let's find out
Here's the fight as I saw it
Round 1- Ali comes out on his bicycle and connects with jabs. Quarry ducks many jabs and is watching Ali's style without throwing many punches yet. Good first round back for Ali.
Ali's Round- 10-9

Round 2- Same strategy for Ali, he's moving effectively and slipping Quarry's left hooks. Quarry starts pressuring more and is more effective then in round 1, but is still being outworked by Ali.

  • A lot of fighters stay in the game too long and Ali was one of a long list. In his prime at his best no one but no one was better. In his prime (this is all conjecture) Ali had the speed, accuracy, the heart and had just enough power to beat anyone, past or present.

  • @fighter3223 Every great fighter is accused of fighting bums,They dont say that in any other sport.Great tennis players, sprinters, golfers, swimmers etc are not accused of that. You dont say oh Usain Bolt is just racing bums or Federer only beat bums in wimbledon,or Tiger woods only beat bums in the open. But when a fighter becomes dominant, people always think its because his opposition must be bums!!its funny

  • Ali loses and regain world heavyweight boxing title three times, I'd like to know who else can do that, anyone knows?

  • Any pro with a record like Quarry had a shot. Ali's style was dance away and jab strong, not good for Quarry. Dont take anything away from Quarry, in a time of historic boxers he was in the top 10, thats hard to do. Frazier said he probably would have been champ if he didnt cut so easy. Foreman admitted he ducked him. Quarry mixed it up wiith some of the best fighters of all time. Ali knew Quarry has a shot, any pro ranked #2 at the time had a great shot.

  • alis shots are so precise !

  • @Davidsondaini Exactly! Whoever said that Quarry even was close to having a prayer was hallucinating because they sure as hell wasn't looking at this fight. Ali straight dominated from beginning to end.

  • @onlyjoetee LOL!! You notice that too I see.

  • @onlyjoetee I am just saying Tyson fought good fighters but not good compared to Ali. Holmes in his prime would be no match against Ali when Ali was in his prime(Holmes wasn't even a boxer in Ali's time Sparring partner for Ali often gettting injured). Holmes fought Tyson out of his prime and Tyson says Holmes was good enough to beat Tyson if Holmes was in his prime so where does Tyson compare to ALI? Nowhere Ali is a legend and Tyson isn't so as Holmes!
