Mrs. Graça Machel got a standing ovation for the passionate way she convinced the audience of the importance of personal responsibility. Not only do we, the citizens and the organizations, need to hold the governments accountable for what is happening in our and other countries, but we also need to hold ourselves accountable. For if we do not try to make a difference, we can't look at anyone else. Also, we need to change our methods in trying to convince others of our message: change the language of communication and personalize the message.
During the KidsRights MDGs Conference on July 9 2010 speakers like Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, former President F.W. de Klerk and Mrs. Graça Machel, highlighted the importance of achieving the Millennium Development Goals for children in the areas of poverty, health and education. Both participants and speakers were very enthusiastic and otherwise positive about the whole day and the outcome; the Johannesburg Call to Action.
The Johannesburg Call to Action urges world leaders to take immediate actions to reach the MDGs, especially those that effect children. KidsRights has put the Call to Action into action by offering it to the UN for the UN MDG Summit, 20-22 September.
