The West Coast chapter of The Meerkat Society met up on July 23, 2008 at Chico's enclosure at the Los Angeles Zoo. Chico is all alone after his friend Spanky died last year. There was a fire near the condor exhibit, but LA Fire knocked it out in 3 hours. Chico was on alert the whole time!

  • keeping a meerkat in solitude for a prolonged time really isn't nice. maybe they should consider sending him to 'fellow earthlings'; also it's sometimes possible to integrate meerkats into another group if it's a male. Keeping him alone there until he dies would be inexcusably cruel.

  • I sent them a letter explaining the anger of meerkat-lovers. Living alone has made Chico noticeably stressful. He will eventually recieve illnesses such as predatory mites and other tick-relted diseases. His food SHOULD consist of a mixture of insects, meat and plantation. Most of these snacks should be placed half a foot underground or higher up, forcing him to be active and therefore, lose weight. Some food should also be put in round balls like they do at Fellow Earthlings.
