Georg Friedrich Handel's Alcina (directed by Christoph Loy) trailer from das Bayerishe Staatsoper in Munich. A CD of this opera with this same cast is available on Studio Farao Label: Alcina (Ivor Bolton/ Anja Harteros (Alcina), Vesselina Kasarova (Ruggiero), Sonia Prina (Bradamante), Veronica Cangemi (Morgana))

Opera is pretty hip these days!

This clip used to be available at the Bavarian State Opera's website videothek. Sadly... not anymore. :o(

  • I was actually there. I witnessed the very last performance, where Kasarova had a sprankled ankle. They made the announcement at the beginning, and the audience was worried. However, it was pretty obvious that she was in a great deal of pain! And at one point, when she actually finished "Mio bel tesoro" and ended with the sprankled foot on the step and Harteros was embracing her and we were applauding, you could see them talk and then Harteros tried to support her better! And that was shocking!

  • Wow. Kudos to both Fraus for that, I say. :o) I'm afraid that was such a bad injury (I think Jurgen Flimm said she ended up with a torn ligament) that it knocked her out of her debut as Ascanio in Berlioz's Benvenuto Cellini at the Salzburg Festival that summer. :o(

Glad to hear you caught that show & thanks for telling us about it. :o) It's a shame that the production wasn't taped for DVD release. :o(

  • Thanks for stopping by, mates! :o) I wish there's a house DVD of this thing, too. It'd be a real shame if there isn't a commercial DVD of Alcina with Vesselina in it. I think Paris Opera also has a recording (they had 'Mi lusinga' in their videothek for a while, but it's taken down now :o( ).

  • Yeah, the injury was bad indeed! Well, they obviously have a video record from the dress rehearsal. Also I can testify that a TV crew was there on that night (they even interviewed me on Kasarova!) so they must have it too. The question remains why they don't commercialize it! But Munich is not exactly famous for its DVD's... except that great Orphee with Kasarova again. I'll be there in July for her Werther and then in Zurich for Carmen. I also saw her Agrippina! She rocked... as always!

  • You can also tell she is doing a long coloratura line right there at 3:01! What skill! This is why I want a DVD SO BADLY!! These great actresses and set design and how they portray the characters is ESSENTIAL to this opera! I'm sorry to whoever made this clip, but it's only making me want the DVD more and the CD less! Maybe that's why they took it offline!

  • I love that clip of sonia Prina undressing to reveal her little black dress. It is just so cool how she takes it off. It makes me want to lie down right with her. Before I start turning into an animal, I want to explain myself: I just can't believe how well she can undress herself while singing! And Bradamante's arias get pretty rough! Which is she singing?

  • Thanks! Vesselina in camouflage with a gun... aw, I wish I have seen it! :)

  • Thanks for preserving this, Smorgy! I wish we had a DVD recording of this production!!!
