Helen & Joseph (full names Helen Micallef and Joseph Cutajar) performing "L-imħabba", the Maltese entry at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest.

Kind of a goofy song, and one that I sorta like for this reason - it's so silly that it's quite cute, really. Still, I understand why this got squashed by the competition, giving Malta's 2nd entry their 2nd successive last place. Also interesting to think that this was the last time we heard the Maltese language at ESC, as all their entries since have been exclusively English-speaking (aside from a few lines in Maltese in their 2000 entry, as setheurovision94 has informed me).

  • I sort of like this one. Even in this strong year, I don't think it deserved last (unlike "Marija-i-Maltija"). A very nice song, very catchy and a great arrangement. Also a decent performance. It sounds like the Mediterranean. I like this song best of their first three attempts. Btw, you're not entirely correct on this being the last time Maltese was heard in the contest, as Claudette Pace uttered a few lines in Maltese in Stockholm in 2000.

  • Oh, yes, you're right - thanks for the correction, and I'll correct it right away. And, indeed, this is kind of a guilty pleasure for me, really, and I agree it's by far the best of those early attempts of theirs. I esp. like the part at the end with shout-outs to the Italiani and the Spanioli :-D

  • I have a soft spot for any Eurovision song that mentions "freaks, Hell's Angels and hippies"!

  • Oh, yes, that too!

  • @breizhcatalonia1993 It's mainly talking about what "a kiss" is called in different languages, that's why it mentions it-Taljani and l-Ispanjoli.

  • The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2010 was the first time since Claudette Pace that Maltese was heard in a Eurovision event from the singer Nicole Azzopardi with her song "Knock Knock...Boom Boom"
