This mystery can really tear you up
like that movie with the big beast's claws
and if you lack the skill of a Sherlock investigation
they will bury you with unjust laws
on this rug with lumps and bruises
they sell their story to the destitute and the poor
how this fat land sometimes sickens
even though, for years, they've had the cure

FRESH HARD TIMES

along the avenue there are vessels to be broken
i have a healthy nest egg, i'm waiting for the end
i have shelves for keepsakes and for tokens
pen and ink, a desk, a bed
i recall how rich men jumped out
from high windows down to the street
their bodies went limp like tailored slacks
lying Picasso-faced right beneath our feet

the street it feeds on riot
i will not turn on our shared plight tonight
into my veiled tent i feel knives ripping
as i pray to the Goddess for a comeback fight
their beliefs are bellicose and bloated
they build larger holes in which to dwell
they will never see the candles in the window
or hear the knelling of the warning bell

i can see slender fingers clutching the throat of Liberty
as we sigh and sign the devil's list of lies
i thought i saw a wicked smile creep across his face
as we doused our souls in the stench of compromise
