Whimsical "World's Simplest CD Player Motor", powered by the world's simplest electric motor, the homopolar motor.

It doesn't actually read CD's (yet!) but it will rotate a CD with only a AA battery, a neodymium magnet, and a piece of copper wire.

This is what I call the Reverse Homopolar type motor because the battery and magnet are the rotor. (In most homopolar motors, the battery is stationary.)

A homopolar motor works from the Lorentz effect, discovered about 150 years ago, where an electric current flowing through the radius of a magnetic disc causes torque on the disc.

Experimental background music by what I call the "Sally Ann Steampunk Band", a weird mix of Steampunk meets Salvation Army band...

For many other strange and fun experiments with magnets, visit my YouTube channel, http://www.youtube.com/mrfixitrick

For Homopolar Motor Kits, with 3 magnets and 6 feet of copper wire, order from the good folks at the American Stirling Engine website: http://www.stirlingengine.com/ecommerce/product.tcl?usca_p=t&product_id=93

Mrfixitrick orders magnets at K&J Magnetics:

  • is that copper wire???.... if yes... hw the f**k does the magnet atract that :S

  • @Silvermist234

The main stand is copper-coated steel rod as used in gas welding. The battery becomes magnetic and sticks to it. There is a copper wire wrapped around the welding rod that acts as a brush against the magnet.

  • @MrfixitRick what if you put another magnet as a base on the bottom to control the swinging effect from the cd...

  • @jacktheripper0194

That could work. Although I kinda like the swingin' CD...;)

Why not try it? It's fun playing with magnets!

  • this music has potential, but its all out of sinc...

  • @coatduck

Think of it as a hung over sally anne steampunk street band from another dimension and it should start to make sense.

  • But that doesn't allow you to control RPM speed .

  • parts 0:32 and 1:32 were the best!

  • Excellent video. See my channel electric motor new design. It is very original model of electric motor (it has no accelerating coil, special phase-shifting devices and condensers).

  • man, you'll need a hell of a laser

  • that music is probably what the cd would sound like xD

  • penis

  • thats nice. if only they made cd's magnet proof

  • @MrfixitRick hmmmmm
