This is me in the video. They are actually aluminum swords. Usually we use steel, which has a beautiful ring to it, but I injured my finger three days before this test, so we switched to the lighter aluminum blades just to be safe. In my experience, aluminum is definitely more clacky (although good ones do ring if you use them very lightly), and you need a good steel sword if you want a really sweet song.
i can see what you mean. however, i have worked with both aluminum and steel swords of many kinds, and i find that ali swords definitely have a ring to them, and not so much the clacky sound.
I had always head that aluminum was more clacky, hence its more widespread use in film since they could edit in better sound and yet use the lighter weight to keep the actors from tiring after multiple takes. Preferred Arms weapons rental mentions this on their page of aluminum cutlasses. I, however, have no firsthand experience with any such pieces.
actually aluminum swords have more of a ring to them when they strike. these were most likely steel swords. the sound quality of the vid isn't the greatest though, so don't quote me. :P
