People have been asking me for some footage from a solo show, so here 'tis. This was Friday, June 27, 2008 at the Suds Pub in Bethel, Maine. The tune is "Fields of Athenry" by Pete St. John. If you are wondering about the vocal harmonies, they are courtesy of a little digital device made by Digitech, called the Vocalist Live 2. The guitar, of course is my trusty Steinberger Synapse TranScale--sounds acoustic, doesn't it!?

  • All I can say is wow! You do an excellent job on both guitar & vocals. This video is the very reason I ordered a Digitech Vocalist 4, after playing with a friend's Vocalist Live 2. I couldn't get his to sound anywhere as good as you did. So I figured I better get the 4. However, after listening to this again.... it's not the equipment, it's the talent (or my lack thereof.) My vids pale in comparison to yours.

  • Hey thanks. One note...I have found that the guitar that drives the tonality can have a lot to do with how the harmonies come out. When I use my acoustic guitar with the built-in Fishman Aura and all the "real acoustic overtones" come out, the harmonies get a bit wacky. With my Steinberger I still use an Aura, but it is after the Vocalist in the signal chain, so I get much better stability in the sound of the harmonies. A lot has to do with the sound of the guitar going in. Try a different axe.

  • That was great! I stumbled upon this because I just ordered a VL2, but now I'm more interested in that guitar and the song. Nice work!

  • The guitar is a Steinberger TranScale Synapse using only the saddle piezo pickup, processed through a Fishman Aura preamp using an Ovation image. Guitar is available from Musicians Friend among others.

  • Hi Dave, was pondering ordering a voc 4, rack so I've been checking out all videos related to the digitech vocalist series. You've got the absolute best performance on YouTube in that genre. Congratulations and best wishes for a bright future, MichaelT

  • Thanks Michael. I wish I had gotten the 4, but hindsight is always 20/20. If only I hand know how extensively I would use it! Let me know how you like it once you have it. Perhaps there's an upgrade in my future.

  • Awesome Man!

  • Great performance Dave, lovely version of a great tune.I have the vocalist 4 and,to be honest it has added a complete new dimension to the sets i play on the circuit. Its a real head turning peace of kit.All the best mate, great job.

  • Good job, Dave. The Steinberger sounds more acoustic than some amplified acoustics do !! Nice use of the Vocalist unit, very tasteful.
