Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) Trolleys, which began operation on April 29, 1993, run on the Riverfront Loop in Memphis, TN.

MATA's trolleys, Car #187 built in 1927; Car #194 built in 1935; and Car 204 built in 1940, were originally built in Porto, Portugal, and restored by Kerns-Wilcheck Associates of Memphis. An additional seven trolleys originally from Porto were also eventually restored and placed into service along with another two from Australia by the mid-1990's.

The MATA Trolley network consists of 24 stations along its three lines: The Main Street Line; the Madison Avenue Line; and the Riverfront Loop.

There are extremely rare US&S "No Right Turn" and "No Left Turn" signals at the fourth crossing I filmed from.

Bells: GS Type 2, Safetran mechanical and Safetran Hybrid. Date: 12/11/07.

  • Sorry, i don't know what roads they are on.

All of the crossings i filmed at are on the Riverfront Loop, which runs right along the Mississippi river. The first two crossings in this video are right by The Pyramid.

    Hope this helps.

  • MATA's trolley line is used every day and it has about ten crossings.

  • oh so it is used like every 15 mins is that right

  • that one i know for a fact came from New orleans. They probally bought it from brazil

  • Based on the lack of passengers in every trolley we observed on this video, MATA seems to be headed toward bankruptcy.

  • NO BELLS

  • The trolleys do not seem to be very full, did you tape this during a non-peak period?

  • yeah the "no left turn" signals are still being made I looked it up on WCH's website Also call me old fashioned but I prefer the old 12" gong/bells than the electronic ones

  • If it was up to me I'd replace every one of those screechy air whistles with ones like 435 has or maybe a 10" incher that's in better shape than the one used in the first sequence; and I'd also get rid of those pans and replace them with Bow Collectors like CTA used to use on the Skokie Swift years ago, or maybe full-diamond pans like the South Shore cars used to have. I'm sorry but those pantographs just don't go with such old, deck-roofed equipment.

  • The third trolley (at 2:30min) was bought in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) but after having been restored by MATA it became completely unrecognizable.

  • i have one at the crossing by my house
