Mary Tyler Moore deserved an oscar. She gives one of the of most incredible performances I have ever seen. So specific, powerful, subtle, passionate. The way she captures that mother's extreme detachment is fascinating. It is as though Conrad is afraid to feel, but feels too much and becomes even more frightened. Yet Beth was so wounded by Buck's death that it seems as though she simply cannot feel anymore ... and when she does, she denies it and hardens. MTM = perfect

Ordinary People is an "extraordinary story" and i believe one on the best movies of the decade. it strikes right to the core of our humanness, and therefore remains rich throughout its plot ..right to it's end. all the main the actors on this film were all superb. esp . Timothy Hutton.. as well as Robert Reford's directing.. I never get tired of it...I can watch over and over again.

Well, MTM was of course great, but to have denied Sissy Spacek her Oscar as Loretta Lynn would have been as bad as denying Charlize Theron her Oscar as Aileen Wuornos, or Hilary Swank as Teena Brandon/Brandon Teena. Some Oscars are so obvious they cannot be denied. But having said that, Donald Sutherland was embarrassingly robbed of a nomination for this film! Not that he would have had a chance of beating DeNiro. At least they got it right with Timothy Hutton, Robert Redford, and the film.

haha mine was the same way.

You don't know how right you are.
Actually, you do.... which is why I replied, lol.

This film makes you realize and be grateful for what you have.

Mary Tyler Moore's best screen performance, and the best Lead Actress performance of 1980- Moore should have won the Oscar over Sissy Spacek in "Coal Miner's Daughter". Moore did win Best Actress (Drama) from the Golden Globes though.

My freaking therapist is a quack and wastes my time. When I tried to end my sessions with her numerous times she was on the edge of tears so I stayed because I felt guilty. I tell her the obvious and she's like, "So how does that make you feel?" Next time i'm gonna say, "How does it make you feel that I feel?"
I had to watch this movie. Conrad came off as a little prick at times. Unfortunately I can relate to this kid.

a mile stone,
i count this to the best movies in the entire world.
people always cherish the classics like casablanca and would count them first when talking about good movies (compared to some actual shit) but this kind of movie is a gift to humanity and real art. i love the acting, it's so brilliant, i love the decent way of adding great music, ...
fuck i love everything about it.

GREAT MOVIE SEE IT MANY TIMES.
I remember sitting in the movie theatre watching this when it came out. At the end, people just sat ... stunned, and you could hear people crying all over the theatre. Never have seen men cry in a theatre before...but I tell you, this movie affected people like I have never seen since. It's disappointing so many people have never even heard of this movie.

What is disappointing is that it is no longer 1980 and we have the crappy movies we have today; that's what's disappointing!
