Season 3 Episode 18 Part 1

Hosted by Leonard Nimoy and broadcast weekly from 1976 to 1982, In Search Of... is the greatest mystery documentary show ever. I grew up watching this show, enjoying the spine-tingling presentation of quasi-fact and dramatic synthesizer-heavy music of Rinder and Lewis.

I am not selling this material, neither am I interested in buying bootlegs. It is currently commercially unavailable, so I am joining with others to make evaluation of this excellent series possible.

I'm posting these videos to fill some gaps left by recently suspended users (from whom I downloaded these). Check my subscriptions to find users with more episodes, and drop me a note if you have posted any "new" ones. Thanks for watching!

ABOUT THIS EPISODE:
It's interesting to me that this episode doesn't mention Mengele's fascination with identical twins or exact details of the monstrosities he committed. While the Wikipedia article does go into a bit of detail about this, it seems to all but ignore Simon Wiesenthal's worthy vigil; thankfully this In Search Of... episode does.

Also, Mengele reportedly died within a week of this episode's original air date (Feb 1, 1979)...
From Wikipedia:
"Mengele, whose health had been deteriorating for years, died on February 7, 1979, in Bertioga, Brazil, where he accidentally drowned or possibly suffered a stroke while swimming in the sea."

  • @WizardOfChicamunga Your heart is in the right place, Wiz, but you miss the point of "freedom" as it applies here. A racist wants to take away the freedom & even the right to life of other human beings. I don't mind if you disagree with my philosophy and I'm certainly not into murdering anyone over it (many racists surely are). You can say whatever you want as long as it's not racist hate mongering/flaming/troll action. Read the comments and you will find Nazi sympathizers who have behaved...

  • This is a very good documentary, but it has some glaring inaccuracies (i.e. that photograph of Mengele seen at the beginning is NOT him).

The main problem with this documentary is that it plays to the legend about Mengele at the time that he was some kind of brilliant super villain; Moriarty to Simon Wiesenthal's Sherlock Holmes. The truth was that Mengele's years as a fugitive were pretty mundane and actually rather lonely.

Gerald Posner's book on Mengele is perhaps the definitive source.

  • heil aryans !

  • is that spock?

  • @Tanjmo He just liked to play with his victims, he probably enjoyed their naivity.

  • Dr. Mengele was an evil, sick, twisted man and it's a shame that he was never brought to justice and lived to practice medicine in South America. In the book I was a Doctor at Auschwitz by Dr. Perl she describes a how a woman managed to escape the gas chambers again and again only to be caught and beaten to an unrecognizable state by Dr. Menegele. And in Five Chimneys by Olga Lengyel, the details of the horrible medical experiments are revealed.
