David Lee Roth - Shy Boy solo

cool solo to DLR's "Shy Boy" as played by Steve Vai on the Eat 'Em and Smile album. I already know that I play the chorus part incorrectly but I didn't feel like rerecording the video since I thought the solo itself turned out pretty good. Hopefully, you can hear me well enough over the song being played in the background.

you get all the notes but, to me, the story of this solo is all about spiraling out of control. honestly, you look like you're watching paint dry. contrary to what some others might think Vai's playing isn't about scales and speed, it's about expressing experiences. his solos on Eat Em and Smile, almost more than anywhere else, all feel like they're on the verge of being out of control. this is all control. technically brilliant but superficial.

technically, it's about 85% there (frankly, it was a bit sloppy and didn't quite nail every note). the expression on the players face is the same emotion I got listening to Vai after a time; initially, the technical ability is stunning, but after a time, seeing scales played at a high speed (at least for those of us who play) is a bit boring. I'd honestly be very interested to hear what this player could come up with on his own, because his facility with the instrument is beyond question.
