Aid to the Chuch in Need presents: Although the Vietnamese government claims to allow freedom of religion as stated in their Constitution, in practice the Church still suffers severe controls.
Evidence is the fact that no diplomatic ties exist between Vietnam and the Vatican, no foreign missionaries are allowed, and neither bishops nor priests can be ordained without official government approval. These consequences become evident in daily life. Although in each diocese often up to 200 candidates wait to enter the seminary, the government restrictions result in the fact that only a handful of students are allowed to study each year. The consequence is that the Church struggles to respond to the needs of the faithful due to the lack of priests.
