Members of rail unions RMT and TSSA protested outside Network Rail headquarters in London on March 12, 2010 over plans to slash 1,500 safety-critical maintenance jobs. Both unions have voted overwhelmingly for strike action , warning that the proposals will inevitably lead to death and injury on the rail network.

To date more than 150 MPs have signed an Early Day Motion condemning Network Rail's plans.
