Why should I ? Why can't they just make a decent-quality CD ? The format is perfectly capable of representing a better master

Sure they're different target audiences, but believe me there will be NO advantage in noisy environments for the CD over the vinyl version in this example.

And in general, this is just an excuse. No amount of compression will help with significant amounts of external noise - whereas earbuds that exclude external noise work really well.

Excellent! I especially appreciate that you stress how the mix is not a product of the medium or digital audio in general, but a rather poor creative decision. It's also awesome that you mention end of side distortion, which bugs the hell out of me. There's such a bizarre culture of ignorant vinyl enthusiasts who don't recognize the limitations and problems with the medium, assuming the often hideous mastering of CD is proof of vinyl superiority.

Sound City over Amazon video streaming on XBox sounded AMAZING! The Real to Reel CD...eww. All that great analog equipment destroyed by hypercompression.

Absolutely brilliant Ian! I heard this difference myself!!! I watched movie last night and was pumped about the sound.,...the movie sounded great....watched on my studio monitors....then i downloaded on iTunes....SQUASHED....was so disappointed....did search on topic to prove i wasnt losing my mind..Thanks so much for confirming what i expected... Makes you want to scream..of all projects to commit this squashing....a guy who purchased a 75,000 dollar NEVE...Thanks again Ian for all you do!
