There could be many reasons for them not being really together... The age difference, the fact that Diana probably considered him as a little brother or even as "her baby"... I also believe that some sad facts that happened during his childhood made it impossible for him to build a concrete relationship with any woman.

What's sure is that Michael loved Diana Ross from the beginning, he admired her so much and said she was "art in motion". They shared a very strong platonic love.
