This video illustrates the best method for observing the presence and speed of MLF occuring in a Red Wine. The thin ring of bubbles really are the most discussed evidence. The actual bubbles are quite miniscule, and due to the color density of the wine, difficult to observe.

Illumination at an oblique angle with a penlight reveals a flurry of rising bubbles, even in a slow to moderately progressing MLF. This is average to slow as far as my typical speeds. This in fact is nearing one month into MLF using VP41 culture. The rate has already slowed to under half the speed of the first two weeks.

The ease of detection and the quantity of bubbles visible is surprising when compared to without illumination. One can really get an appreciation of the rate of progression of MLF. The mysterioius process which is often a source of confusion to winemakers is a little easier to master this way.
