Eggs And Sausage
(Tom Waits 1975, album "Nighthawks at the Diner")
You know there were nighthawks at the diner
A little joint called Emma's 49er
With a rendezvous of strangers around the coffee urn tonight
And all the gypsy hacks and now the insomniacs
And the paper's been read
As the waitress said
Eggs and sausage and a side of toast
Coffee and a roll and a hash browns over easy
And some chile in a bowl with burgers and fries
Now what kind of pie?
Now you see in this graveyard charade
Well it was kinda of a late shift masquerade
With 2 for a quarter and its dime for a dance
With Woolworth rhinestone diamond earrings and a sideway's glance
And as the register rings
And the waitress sings
Eggs and sausage...
Now you see the classified section
Well it offers no direction
And it was cold caffeine in a nicotine cloud
And as the touch of your fingers
Continues to Linger burning in my memory
Well I've been 86ed from your scheme
And I'm in this melodramatic nocturnal scene
I'm a refugee from a disconcerted affair
At the end of an emotional cul-de-sac
And as the lead pipe morning falls
Waitress calls
Eggs and sausage...
Coffee and a roll and a hash browns over easy
Now what kind of pie?
"A la mode" if you will
Just come in and join the crowd
Have some time to kill
Nothing else to do
Just come in and join the crowd
Have some time to kill
Nothing else to do
Just come in and join the crowd
Have some time to kill

Tom Waits is epic. No one does a better job of painting a scene with words then him.

Thanks - I think so - I afraid my humble translation is not as much epic - I just hope it stays hoonest :)
