USe the clear Plastic Mylar sheet that come with the kit, no sticky residue or wobbly surfaces, the mylar is stiff and leaves a flat surface, sand free.

You can also use wax paper in place of masking tape it will be harder to judge how well it looks but it will eliminate the adhesive residue left over by the tape.
