herzog zwei came out for the japanese genesis on 12/15/89 according to gamefaqs.com, so it does not require codes to play on the US genesis, as shown in this video. however, if it came out in late 92 or later, it would require codes to play on the US genesis. this rule applies to all japanese genesis imports: )

@simkhovich Right, I just happened to have only that one game, other releases do need codes.
