From 1982, this is an instore disc showing off the new stereo sound capability added to CED videodiscs. Since it runs 45 minutes I've cut out most of the actual demo material, leaving in only what's original to this disc. I think these girls were on a Doublemint commercial, but not sure.

Stereo was planned for the format from the start, but didn't come on the market until about a year later. Stereo was encoded on the discs the same way as FM and analog TV- the player "decodes" the stereo signal, and mono discs still play in plain old mono (no noise in stereo or drifting from one side to the other like sometimes happens on other formats.)

Curiously, RCA and the term "Selectavision" are never mentioned on this disc. We never get to see a player or any other equipment here either. A lot of the discs featured weren't even available at the time this disc came out- some were only in mono having been issued earlier, a few were reissued in stereo later, sometimes on other labels (such as Grease and Saturday Night Fever on Paramount's own label.) Many of the covers shown here are different from the final product too.

  • Bluray should buy two blondies too.

  • @fabeo0050 They'd need 8, to show off the 7.1 sound.

  • WHY IS THIS ONLY IN 360p!?!?!

  • @atari2600a You can select 480p on this.

  • Nice clip of Paul Simon. thanks!

  • @gli7utubeo Incidentally that concert was the first title from Pioneer Artists on laserdisc. It's since been issued on DVD.

  • LOL! Funniest shit right here on youtube!

  • RCA should have been forced to refund everyones money for this ripoff

  • @atari2600a A.) you can select 480, B.) even so it doesn't matte anyway, since the video source this was taken from is only 240i.

  • Man, id have loved to see these inventions when they were still big on the market...Im trying to find Laserdiscs and a player right now... can anyone help?

I also find the CED inbtruiging. what other video formats are there?

(I already know about VHS, betamax, 16 mm, Video CD, Laser disc, CED, DVD, and blu-ray, but what else is there?)

  • /watch?v=UlLB5sipAIw

here is a video i did on this !

  • @sevenbegore True, but this is darn good for 1981-1985. The product didn't fail in technical quality, It just bled millions of dollars for RCA at a time when they were in bad sha[e. In 1985 they announce not only the end of CED but they sold a relatively strong (then) financial company called CIT for some much needed capital infusion.

AND THEN THEY SOLD NBC TO GE

and the rights to their name and electronic lines to Thomson and the record labels.

LD took Pioneer to DVD which saved THEM.

  • It dawns on me now after so long,,,

These are the Landers sisters, aren't they?

  • @atari2600a Likely so but I have a few dozen CEDs and just got an entry player, which I haved used yet and even the lower resolution got my spirits up for what I can watch.

I have more CEDs than Laserdiscs, and I've got FOUR Pioneer players! I also have an SVHS of repute, Mitsubishi HS-U70 and two SuperBeta Hi-fis one needs the eject fixed and the other is the last US model, the 2000...

It's true that I can watch bad movies in more formats than many.
