I've actually been using 3ds since the DOS version, about 12 years ago, but I've never really had cause to wander into mentalray territory until recently, when I started doing work for commercial broadcast...hence the confusion. I guess I should have looked into this long ago, then I wouldn't be so far behind the curve on mentalray! Hmmm...my trouble with the error may be that I do have a plane in my scene, as you suggested. I'll try the shell mod. Thanks a ton for your advice!

Great! What kind of lighting & light settings did you use in this scene?

the simplest there could be :) mentalray renderer, single skylight and finalgather with around 200 samples.

Can you use final gather without global illumination? Or is final gather kind of a sub-setting of global illumination?
duncanjwebster 3 years ago
you can use final gather with out global illumination. In fact, for such scenes as this, GI would have no effect and would only increase the render time. The effects of GI can be seens in closed spaces, rooms, etc where the light can easliy bounce back and forth.

Aha. Gotcha. Thanks. I'm still trying to get my mind around all the various ways to light a scene. mrSun, mrSky IESsun, IESsky, GI, FG, etc., etc. In some instances, I get the error message, "no photons stored after emitting 1000000..." and I can't figure out what's causing it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

yup, it can get confusing at the beggining. Bout the error, it did happen to me a few times. Don't reamember the direct cause :P You need to double check if the lights your using, don't conflict with the options you have choosen. Try out with differnt light types and objects (if your using planes, give them a shell mod to turn them to boxes). What effect are you trying to simulate? Sometimes the smalest checkbox somewere there buried under the tons of opt. can cause such a major problem :)
