My Choice 612 - Puccini: Turandot (Finale)

We'll hear the voices of Tenor Plácido Domingo and Soprano Ghena Dimitrova singing in the triumphant finale of Turandot, by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini.

Giacomo Puccini (1858--1924) was an Italian composer whose operas, including La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Turandot, are among the most frequently performed in the standard repertoire. Some of his arias, such as "O Mio Babbino Caro" from Gianni fsSchicchi, "Che Gelida Manina" from La Bohème, and "Nessun Dorma" from Turandot, have become part of popular culture.

Plácido Domingo (1941), is a Spanish tenor and conductor known for his versatile and strong voice, possessing a ringing and dramatic tone throughout its range.

Ghena Dimitrova (1941--2005) was a Bulgarian operatic soprano. Her voice was known for its power and extension used in operatic roles such as Turandot in a career spanning four decades.

Turandot is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini, set to a libretto in Italian by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni. Turandot was unfinished at the time of Puccini's death and was later completed by Franco Alfano.

Turandot is a Persian word and name meaning "the daughter of Turan", Turan being a region of Central Asia which used to be part of the Persian Empire.

In Persian, the fairy tale is known as Turandokht, with "dokht" being a contraction for dokhtar (meaning daughter),
