The Ian Gillan version of Gethsemane from the original 1970 concept album of the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice rock opera: Jesus Christ Superstar.

Due to controversy over the musical's content, Rice and Webber were forced to make a concept album before they could even dream of turning this into a stage musical. Original cast members included Ian Gillan (Jesus), Murray Head (Judas), as well as Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdalene) and Barry Dennen (Pilate) who would go on to reprise their roles in the 1973 film version starring Ted Neeley (Jesus) and Carl Anderson (Judas).

"Jesus Christ Superstar" follows the last days of Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. It is not meant in any way to be a statement regarding religious opinions, and never claims to be historically accurate or true to its source material. Rather, it is an enticing and rich musical set to the backdrop of extraordinary events, and features some damn good music.

  • Does anyone knows if there are any torrents for this album or for the soundtrack of the 1973 film? I can't find any :/ thanks

  • @pedro10gouveia Probably, but it's very easy to find on eBay or Amazon. The album itself was reasonable at $15 for two CDs.

  • I saw the concert in Sydney in 1973 and have this double album ... does anyone know if Gillan was ever part of a live version?

  • @FloydyTube According to a previous post from another user, part of this song "Appears on the Nobody's Perfect Live Album from 1990. I belive during Strange Kind of Woman." He never performed the role of Jesus live on stage, but he has done bits from the musical during other concerts. I haven't personally been successful at finding any of them online.

  • @chimpiki Thanks for the update... would have loved to see this God of singers rock that role live :-)

  • @FloydyTube Just added a link in the video description to a live but very brief rendition of the "Superstar" chorus.

  • Neely's good, but Gillan is far more powerful and full.

  • @chimpiki Found the torrents! Thanks anyway, this is truly a masterpiece and worth buying it. By the way I rather the film version of this song than the album one, I think it is more powerful

  • Kudos for giving original credit. Even when asked about torrents, you direct value to original author(s). That's a sure sign of advanced civilization. Thanks again.

  • @TheHeathenAngel No he doesn't. When the original recording was made the artists were allowed to interpret the songs in their own way - hence Gillan's trademark screams, which he had already applied to Deep Purple. Neely basically copies Gillan's individual style.

  • @FloydyTube According to Gillan, he was offered the role in the film but he was fully committed to Deep Purple's touring schedule at the time and had to decline. Ironically, he left Deep Purple just a few months later.

  • tu quoque Pietro!
