The Granite Avenue Bridge on the Neponset River, between Boston and Milton.

Rarely, the bridge gets stuck in the "UP" position.

Hilarity Ensues!

  • If you listen carefully, you can hear the bridge operator yelling at a couple of jerks to move their cars.

    Ah, Boston drivers!

  • Nice subject. I've seen this operation from the street side since the early 1960s. I remember some kids that I was in grade school with swimming in the river from the bridge in '71 or '72. Wouldn't recommend it then or now.

  • When I was a kid in the mid-1970's, my friends (but not me - I was chicken/smart)used to climb to the very top of this bridge - all the way up on top of the concrete block - and jump off. Very dangerous and the water was pretty polluted, but nobody ever got hurt. Crazy stuff!! We also used to jump off the roofs of buildings into the water at Tenean Beach (about 2 miles from this bridge).

  • Cooool! I like the design of the bridge a bunch, counterbalanced and all. I like how quickly it can cycle. A pity this design isn't more prevalent.

  • Wow. That is one of the oddest looking bridges I've seen.
