The last game displayed very advanced RPS strategy. Most people try not to be predictable, and the perceived hallmark of predictability is to come out with the same throw three times in row. So when Tim did a two-paper run (throwing paper twice in a row, sorry for the RPS slang), Tom naturally assumed that his next throw would either be rock or scissors. In that case, rock is the safe choice (since it beats scissors and stalemates with rock). Knowing this, Tim threw a papery death blow.
