um... this might be the best music piece written in the history of the human race. The most listened to, for sure. And no i don't think it has anything to do with the dog movie.

in fact, the painstaking process Karajan himself used to get these musicians to the point they were at on this exact recording is pretty well-documented. It took them months; he's like their coach, tooling and refining every single point of their playing for ages beforehand, just so they can perform for a short time. More than anything, his stick-waving is reminding them of countless musical ideas they prepared beforehand - which is a lot of pressure when so many musicians are counting on you.

He's a crazy old man who came in from across the street. Nobody has the heart to tell him to sit down and stop waving his crazy plastic stick.

He's a crazy old man they brought in from across the street. Nobody has the heart to tell him to sit down and stop waving his crazy plastic stick.

Additionally; he is the orchestra magician. He prevents the audience from becoming stupefied by the orchestra.

Additionally; he is the deaf translator, he translates the music into notational sign language. After the ADA instituted the audience members with disabilities act in 1546 every orchestra was required to have one.

The middle guy is the conductor. His no. 1 job is to make the orchestra play together and conduct the music to his vision. He does this through multiple ways: keeping time, indicating the dynamics of a passage, pulling themes, and shaping the phrases. The music flows through him and out to the audience.
