Making a greensand mold and pouring molten aluminum.

A quick tour with sample castings. Shake-out, breaking apart the mold.

Note: Gating system seperated from casting because the mold was still quite hot. Normally we wait about 5 minutes.

  • What is the water to greensand ratio? My greensand comes out too wet to pour aluminum into the mold

  • @2r1f 100 lbs sand, 1 gallon water and 12 lbs bentonite, about 6%? We torch the sand if it is too wet. Use a hand torch where the metal will flow in the mold, before you close it.

  • you make it look so easy

  • @Nanpa0 It is very easy to learn. In our spare time we teach metal casting to kids and adults(special needs), They love sand molding and watching us pour there items and love to hold or wear there castings.Donna

  • how does the sand not fall apart when you put the brick on it? Do you mix the sand with oil and clay? Or is this a special kind of sand?

  • @tahtunka08 We use silica sand(125 grit) , bentonite(clay) and water. The bentonite holds the sand in place, There is a greensand recipe on our website. You can work with the sand wet and right before you close the mold up, use a hand torch and go over the mold it will take the moisture out, close it up and pour.

  • @WickedKnight07 Sorry, no! The molten plastic would stick to the sand and be unusable. Plastic molds are made of metal. You can make a metal mold and pour the plastic into it.
