Fifth Krishna Raj Memorial Lecture on Contemporary Issues in Health Care and Social Sciences held by Anusandhan Trust and its Centres in Mumbai.
Dr Amar Jesani, Trustee Anusandhan Trust talking on the theme of the current event; Dr Abhay Shukla, Coordinator SATHI, Pune talks of the theme- the pressing need for moving towards providing universal health access in India. He talks of how India, in a way, suffers the worst of both systems- a large, highly privatized, unregulated private sector and a poorly funded, undermanaged public health sector. How can public health be strengthened? How can we better regulate the private sector.? How can both be brought under a common system that is publicly funded and managed?

The issue of universal access to health systems is being internationally discussed. One of the countries leading the field of providing such services is Brazil, and India has many lessons to learn from there. Recently, in India, the Prime Minster's office and the Planning Commission set up a high level expert group which is deliberating on what contours such a system could possibly have in the Indian context with its many diversities.
The Medico Friend's Group, two days from now, is scheduled to open a meet on Universal Health Care. So the subject is very much on many agenda.

Dr. Shukla moves on to close his introduction with a mention of a special problem- the injust treatment meted out to Dr Binayak Sen, in jail on very unfair charges. He tells the audience that the Petition will be available at the venue, after the talk, those who wished to, should sign it.
