Friend of mine was looking at upgrading subs and I was feeling a bit creative so after hours and hours of modeling in Bass Box Pro 6 with dozens of different woofers, I found the best combination for the allotted trunk space.

Trunk space is precious as the vehicle's owner has a child and frequently needs to carry strollers and such in the trunk. Problem is he wanted ported bass with low extension but no room for a big ported box. I decided to try messing with Passive Radiators since through my research it seemed like this was the best way to achieve low low "ported" bass in a small enclosure. Well it WORKED! Well exceeded my expectations!

You're looking at a Resonant Engineering SEx10d4 and a TC Sounds VMP12 passive radiator in a 15" prefab sealed box. I created a 15" to12" stepdown ring for the passive radiator and cut a 10" hole in the side of the box for the active woofer.

Total net internal box volume is 1.6 cubic feet. Box tuning frequency is 27hz and F3 is 23hz! No additional weight has been added to the moving mass of the passive radiator (stock "mms" of 390grams) The sub/box has a completely linear zeroed out response from 30hz and up. No peaks!

We were upgrading from a sealed Polk MOMO 12"
Power is a Kicker KX600.1 (now run in 2 ohms)
Vehicle is a Saturn ION

This video does NOT do justice. This thing slapps!

  • I ended up placing my sa12 in a 1.84 prefab with a CSS APR15. What a difference from the sealed 1.0. The radiator is currently inverted until i get some spacer rings, so I havent made any adjustments in weight (the adjustments are made from the front of the PR). I slapped it together real quick, but once i get my spacers, i will reseal the box and be able play around with tuning. So far I am very impressed with the output, lows, flat response and lack of roll off.

  • Thanks :) Larger box, no. at least, only if the back of the PR touches the magnet of the active driver. That is something you'll just have to try and see. I had to use a sealed 15" box to make this combination fit if that is any indication. I spent DAYS modeling this in BB6pro. I seem to recall the Sundown SA series woofers didn't have as nice a response curve or tuning frequency as the RE series woofers. Long story short: it will work, but won't be as efficient as this setup.

  • Impressive!!! I just put a Sundown sa 12 in a 1.0 f3 sealed box. I'm thinking about doing this. Would that same TC work? Would i also need a larger box?

  • whats the name of that song bro i love dubstep
