I usually put together a demo video for aircraft I sell in Second Life, to give prospective customers a look at some of the capabilities. This jet uses the SLJoy proxy (also written by me), which sends axis/button deltas into SL via SLProxy.

As far as I know, this is the first true joystick-controlled aircraft in Second Life. (It was always possible to map an axis to a key on the keyboard, but that hardly gives you the fine control that people buy joysticks for in the first place.)

After shooting this video, I decided to pull the SLJoy project. It may come back someday.

  • nice plane i didnt tought that it cud be so realistic in SL cuz of lag

  • It can, but it takes a lot of work (100s of hours) and you have to simplify the model because the CPU time, memory, and interprocess communication just aren't there. It will get better when Mono (very fast script execution) is available, but it still won't be as good as X-Plane.

  • Hi Lewis,

I accidentally hit Remove instead of Reply on your joystick question, sorry about that. To answer: joystick support is not currently built into Second Life. SLJoy was a project I worked on last year but I have since decided to pull it. I (or someone else) may work on joystick support in the future.

I am not planning on letting anyone "borrow" the Nimbus, sorry.

  • is all that land u have u bought? or is it part of the huge second life world?

  • No, it's in the vehicle park which is public land. It would take a lot of money to buy all that land!

  • There have been airshows in the past. This is limited by the handoff code that passes things between simulators in SL, which until recently has been really shaky with vehicles, particularly when they are running lots of scripts (like mine.) You can see some of this in the Nimbus demo here - it "hiccups" for a moment when the aircraft (and pilot) are handed off to a new sim. (Before, it was much worse.)

Aerial races and combat is already a possibility in SL. It's been done.

  • yes, i built a plane with many large scripts trying to make it realistic but as the scrip is larger it runs slower...well i cant wait to see how it would work on that Mono(very fast script) it wouldnt be like X plane or YS Flight but still its enough for sl

  • please may i have a borrow of this my name is lewis skall

    cheers

  • NICE! I can only dream of someting more like MS combat FS in the future! I would join SL for a real nice general and combat aviation feature!

Air shows for players to attend would be the BEST FUN!
