Black Panther involved in Jena incident released on bond

A New Orleans man arrested during Monday's "Jena Justice Day" rally and march was released on bond shortly after the activities at LaSalle Parish Courthouse wrapped up.

William Winchester Jr., 42, was the only one arrested during the daylong event. State Police identified him as a member of the New Black Panther Party, which got into a scuffle with law enforcement officers just as the Nationalist Movement supporters were returning to the courthouse from their march.

Winchester, who was charged with battery of a police officer and resisting arrest, was released on $3,000 bond. State Police say he struck an officer in the midst of the incident in which the group was physically moved behind barricades after refusing to move on their own on several occasions.
LaSalle Parish Sheriff's Chief Deputy Daryl Husbands said that was the only incident that led to an arrest during the activities. There were extra patrols throughout Monday and into Tuesday.
