In sharp contrast to the last video of Tom, playing a the slow "Meditation", here he is going full steam ahead on a rag also composed in 2009. Rudolf Radna composed this one. I had posted already a video of when Tom sight-read this piece for the first time, but I thought Rudolf might like to see it performed for an actual audience.

This was during Tom's traditional Sunday-morning all-contemporary set at the 2009 West Coast Ragtime Festival.

Rudolf's YouTube channel is http://www.youtube.com/user/Hrodulf and he posts all his music at http://hrodulf.deviantart.com/gallery/

  • If tom can site read things like this, and play so well from memory, how many times do you suppose he practices a piece if he is going to play it for a performance? Like when he did KK Ragtime at the convention, he made a lot of changes to it, did he practice it or just come up with it?

  • It depends on the piece. For simpler tunes like this one, he might not run through them much or at all. But for a more difficult tune, he will. He played my Mad Scientist Rag moments before this, for the first time in years before an audience. He said he practiced it ahead of time to avoid the train wreck that happened last time he tried to play it in a set -- without having practiced it first.

  • As for K.K. Ragtime, between the video of him sight-reading it and the next video, of him playing it from memory with Julia on flute, it seems he must have played it quite a few times, since he had memorized it! He really likes the tune, so...

He never plays anything the same way twice, so he's always coming up with changes on the spot each time he plays anything.

  • Another great performance by Mr. Briar; his abilities speak for themselves.

As for scores, scores are coming. Most of my rags were composed on a midi controller, so no scores were created; I have decided the next thing I should do is have a score for everything, but since I wrote 120 rags it will take some time. I've said this before, but I think this time I am going to see it through and make it happen.

  • where's the sheet music for this song?! I wanna play it SO BADLY!

  • Insane.
