*READ FIRST*Ok watch the clip carefully, you see the egg fall off Carroll's fork and hit Jean, then she picks it up and tries to eat it only to have it fall again. Now i know that back then they didn't like to stop the camera's and do retakes, mostly because of the live audience. BUT when All in the Family was in it's ninth season the episodes were played back to a live audience for live responce. Now knowing all this what do you think the answer is?

  • @whewfan It was the episode where Mike/Gloria rent the Jefferson house next door. When Archie finds out, he's pissed and pushes Mike's face into the cake. Reiner spits it out, because---believe it or not---that fat liberal hates chocolate. (That is the truth.)

  • Theres a moment in the KKK episode where one of the guys carrying a cross hits Archie on the head, somewhat lightly but it didn't seem intentional or even noticed by the actor, but Carol played along and acted like it kind of hurt. This show had great actors.

  • @GINGERALER Agree Archie's flipping the egg was scripted, I just think Edith trying to eat it and it falling out of her mouth was an accident that got laughs, so they kept it.

  • Probably an accident that got big laughs, so they kept it. Supposedly sitcom episodes are performed twice in front of two different studio audiences, and they cut together the episode that airs on TV using the strongest parts of both episodes--best read of a line, biggest laughs, etc. O'Connor & Stapleton were pros, so they stayed in character and it worked. No laughs and we'd never have seen this and they'd have used the other take without the flying egg bit.

  • Not scripted, or scripted to go a different way instead of what we saw. I agree they were so used to working together, it just came natural to them.

  • i think by then, they knew each other well enough to where it wasnt scripted and could make it look like it was lol

  • There was a moment on All in the Family when Meathead shoves a big chunk of chocolate cake in his mouth. As the audience applauds and they go to commercial, Rob Reiner, not aware the cameras are still rolling, spits the cake out! Usually with filmed shows, if the actors have to eat something, they have to anticipate another take of the same scene. If they keep eating, eventually they'll be too full!

  • @therealsolstice that's for sure! Today all sit coms are one liners and average actors since the actors don't have much to work with.
