The benevolent people of the planet Emerald sends mighty Starman to aid the earth against the wicked Spherons threatening our very existence!
This is a terrific movie, it's a Japanese sci fi flick having a whole lot of fun. It was filmed in 1959, when space still had breathable air, scientists always had a pretty teenaged daughter and a young but brilliant son, and the bad guys wore uniforms suspiciously similar to those of Nazi Germany.
The sets and particularly the aliens here are really good! They went a long way to try and make the humans portraying the alien "council" look alien. Also, this is probably the first movie when those dread words "Death Star" turned up.
It's by Shintoho, one of the studios of the Golden Age of Japanese cinema.
I'm just glancing at the Wiki and it seems Toho was founded by 'defectors' from Shintoho. Sure looks like it from this movie!
The music, Invaders From Mars, is a jam that went spacy. This was originally just Mike and Tedd, and well, it grew.
With the big cartoon rhythm and lots of cheesy and fun embellishments, it's definitely got the kooky space movies and big rubbery monsters slugging it out feel to it.
It also displays one of the things we used to like to point out when we were playing live: Tedd does most of those effects on guitar without pedals. We'd set up to play, and the bands with us would be looking for the array of pedals that should be there with the Jackson guitar and Fender Bassman: And there was none. We should have brought a box filled with bicycle pedals just to really pop their brains!
So all you are hearing here is the drums, bass, guitar, and Moog MG-1. The Moog is filling in the bass line for the most part, there's only a few points where it's taking up the effects.
You can get the movie from the Internet Archive, natch.
