A "quick screen" to Javares McRoy worked to perfection at the beginning of the game and again at the end Friday night, enabling Lakeland to escape an upset against Lauderdale Lakes Boyd Anderson. The second-ranked Dreadnaughts (4-0) had to come from behind twice and overcome 14 penalties to win, 27-22, before a homecoming crowd of about 3,000 at Bryant Stadium.
"It was ugly, but we got it done," said coach Bill Castle. "We had our problems and you have to give them credit, but we made the big plays." The biggest were made by McCroy, a speedy sophomore receiver. On the third play of the game, he took a short pass from Jarred Haggins and turned it into a 59-yard touchdown, Lakeland's only score of the first half.
Boyd Anderson (1-2) took the lead with three straight scores, including a couple of field goals by Presley Wright. Lakeland regained control in the third quarter when Aaron Truedell scored on a third-and-21 pass and a 26-yard run. But a couple of Lakeland fumbles helped the Cobras move back into the lead. Boyd Anderson quarterback Jackie Wilson, who would leave the game twice with injuries, connected with Travis Reynolds on a 14-yard TD pass that put Boyd Anderson up,But Haggins went back to the screen, and McCroy broke a 64-yard gain to set up the winning touchdown. Haggins threw his third TD pass of the game to McCroy for the game winner with just 3:30 remaining.
