I'm surprised that this song hasn't been used in a Quentin Tarintino movie, yet

one of those works of art----like when you hear it for the 1st time, it's like you've been hearing it all your life. Never gets old. Escondido, CA 1970 -1972, In the Alley. Magical Club. Sittin' in the bands lap. The Dillards opening. Beautiful crowd. Beautiful music. TImeless times....

I recall a concert in 1977 at the Paramount N.W. in Seattle when Dan was so wasted, he tried to pull a Jim Morrison antic and was immeadiately escorted off the stage. Kind of humorous, but not what I expected. Thankfully, Jesse Colin Young put on a halfway decent show, so the night wasn't a total waste.

Very nice arrangement of a classic Dan Hicks song. Beautiful.

Timeless and brilliant.

@flyingfishdreams I agree - sounds like bossa nova to me, too.
-
@pkswafford maybe bosa nova?

I've been listening to this entire album since 1970. It puts me in an abstract kind of trance. This song intoxicates me. It makes me scare myself. It's some kind of voodoo,

@pinkerama You might fing it interesting to know that Dan Hicks was one of the original members of the first band to bill itself as psychedelic called "The Charlatans." You can find them on youtube. They were formed to be the house band for the revived Red Don Saloon, in Virginia City, Nevada, in 1965, although they and all the revivists were proto-hippies from SF. It's a pretty wild history.

@portlandjohn8 And gone forever.

The Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, CA 1969-1970?? What stunning and striking music. Drop some acid or mescaline or smoke a doobie and sway around and around on the wings of harmony, violin, bass, guitar and oh.. oh those Lickettes!!! Had the vinyl and wore it out!

Back again for another listen. I ordered a Dan Hicks 'greatest hits' album last week, right after hearing this 'original version' for the first time but still waiting for it to arrive. I learned of this original recording from the Thoma Dolby version (also excellent!). The guitar, violin, bass, and backup singers, along with Hicks' distinctive folksy voice, really create the most unique and beautiful sound. I've lived in CA all my life (until now) and never heard of Dan Hicks; such a shame!
