Richard (being a woodsman, an expert at such a task) was tracking Jennsen's movements from her last known location. If he could see no likely place on her path where she could have hidden the boxes from Rahl's men, he could make a reasonable guess that she had thrown them into the lake at the point where her trail passed by it. He needed to search only the area of the lake within the range of her throw.
