Cannon has a proprietary hot shoe, you can get an adapter.

u should download audacity, and its free...get rid of that hiss sound in the camera and mic.

What you hear there is the air purifyer, the humidifier and whatever other contraption we had running during the winter time...you can even hear the bird clock go off in the kitchen 25 ft away off to one side.

Which would be the best mic for the hv30?

It depends on what you will be using it for and if you have an XLR adaptor on your cam. I have a Beachtek DXA-2 mounted to my HV30 which allows you to use microphones with a XLR connector. If you don't have one of these you cannot use mics with XLR. If you are doing an interview or want a mono signal with good side rejection then the AT897 is great but if you want a stereo field then you have other options...
