In other news, let's talk flu. Did you know that in the United States 5 to 20 percent of the population gets the flu every year and that more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from seasonal flu-related complications?

Did you know that getting a flu shot is part of a regiment to avoid the flu? Well, it's true.

Other parts of a flu-avoidance regimen include:

remember to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer regularly
sneeze into your sleeve or a kleenex and not into your hands,
Avoid toughing your eyes, and
try to avoid close contact with sick people

Now that might be tough for healthcare workers, so the CDC recommends that all healthcare workers get a flu vaccination every year. And since flu season is upon us, a couple of our clinical leaders thought they would be some of the first to step up and lead by example.

As you can see, Dr. Marlon Priest and Dr. Andrea Mazzacolli got their flu shots at a flu clinic recently held at the Health System Office. And many of our local facilities are doing the same thing.

So find out about your local facility and get on the move.

Even healthy people get the flu, and it can be serious.

To find out more, go to the CDC website www.flu.gov. There you will find out just about everything you need to know about the flu and how to prevent it. Check it out today...and get your vaccine right away.

Finally, it was a trip to the White House.

On September 20, 2011 Bon Secours Health System CEO Rich Statuto, Bon Secours Baltimore Health System CEO Dr. Sam Ross and Bon Secours Health System VP of Corporate Communications Peggy Mosely when to the White House.

The invitation came from the White House, of course, and the Department of Health and Human Serrvices for a meeting.

The title of the meeting was "Improving Health Outcomes through Faith-Based & Community Partnerships and was held by "The White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships."

And I'll bet you didn't know that office was in existence.

Anyway, the purpose of the meeting was to hear from 3 very successful healthcare models.

-Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare in Memphis, TN

-Camden Coalition of Health Care Providers in Camden, NJ, and

-Southcentral Foundation on the Nuka System of Care in Alaska

Participants heard about their systems and how they are so successful.

Some 70 health system CEOs, physicians and community-based health providers as well as senior domestic health policy leaders from the White House attended the meeting to identify best practices, how to attain real healthcare improvements, and how to get others to replicate their health system successes.

That sounds like a very interesting meeting.

Well, that's it for this week. Stay tuned to this portal for future up to the minute information on these and other stories on bSN Headline News. I'm Dave Schlachter. Thanks for joining us.
