I don't know if anyone else realizes this, but the entire Star Control 3 game lore is all about mirroring Earth's history with metaphor.

The ploxis rebel said that, their free culture had generated amazing amounts of wealth. The more wealth available for potential taxation, the more temptation there is to implement taxes.
Hense the reason why the most free nation in the world (USA) could so quickly become one of the least free nation in the world.
