Wayne Rooney - The great thing is that he's English

Wayne Rooney's dive to "win" a penalty for Man Utd. against Arsenal at Old Trafford, August 29th, 2009.

Look closely and you can see Rooney's left foot drag behind him and actually dig into the grass. Then you see his left leg start to collapse in preparation for his dive. All of this before Almunia has actually made any contact. Then the out-stretched right leg to move the ball past Almunia (resulting in a complete loss of control of the ball) before falling to heap on the ground.

Given the shape of his body before contact, I believe it would have been almost for Rooney to stay on his feet even if Almunia had not touched him.

100% dive from an expert in the art.

It would have been a penalty anyway, but the way he dives even before the keeper touches him kind of make anyone want to not award it....

But that's weird, I thought the English hated divers and cheaters. But if that's the case, why is Rooney so loved up there?

I guess it's easy to forgive cheaters when they play for your team huh?

@chrishowe stop trying to justify wengers mistakes hes slowly but surely destroying your team theres been years in the past when wengers been given 70mil to spend and has spent nothing its a joke yes its good to be finacialy efficient but to make the big money you have to win trophies and to win trophies you have to spend money simple and yes united are worth more but we also have debt, i respect wengers abilty to buy cheap and develope players but then he sells them first chance for profit!!!

Just for the record, Wenger's never had UK PNDS 70 million to spend, ever. Even now he doesn't have that much.

So, perhaps you can enlighten us all regarding football finances: How much extra have United made because they have won silverware over the past 7 years compared to how much they would have made by just being in the top 4 of the EPL and making it out of the group stages of the Champions League?

I agree with you that English football is among the ones with the least diving. But is it THE ONE with the least diving? I don't know, I don't watch every championship in the world. Neither do you, so you can't say that either, treat every foreigner as the same "people" with the same "habits".

And anyway, English players cheat 5x more often than English fans admit. Which is still much less than Spain or Brazil of course.
