When we were kids, we played hard (well, my generation did... don't know about today). That was our stress relief. As adults, we workout hard. Might feel like a stress relief, but the modern workout programs and techniques are traumas to the body, as damaging as emotional or psychological stress. Whether your goals are aesthetic or performance-based, you might be beating yourself up for a prettier or stronger muscle. Give it time... something's gonna fall apart.

Although there's a lot to be said for more passive forms of mobility that might bookend a workout, we've found that taking the child's view of movement as play, and adding intense, full movements into a workout itself can create a more capable body with joints, tissues and spirit that will embrace longevity without losing performance.

We're strength competitors who are embracing healthy joints and tissues. We don't need long fancy yoga flows, nor will we do anything that might be considered pretty. But we will move with intensity through a wide range of choices, not only increasing our performance options, but having some fun as well.

Bodytribe Fitness, the reigning king of raw, low-budget, high-concept DIY videos, is releasing its next DVD, Brutal Recess, at the beginning of August. Featuring bits from workouts and lectures from around the country, this DVD offers equal parts philosophy and technique. Enjoy this preview, and thanks for watching.

  • Huh. This all looks pretty fun.

  • Love this. Will be getting a copy! You have just inspired me with the tyre exercises too! :)

  • Couldn't have said it better myself. Over the last few years I have learned not only to train using a variety of "tools" but also to train for functional real world application and just for the fun of it. I want to be able to play with my children on the playground and outperform the teens in my youth group (I'm 35). Man if I did not lift, throw, sprint, push, pull, ect. I would be a miserable person. I have to have that outlet.

I still have a lot to learn though.

    Thanks for the post.
