This film documents the final days of the last mine of its kind in the United States. The New Gladstone Mine in Centerville, Iowa, was using methods and techniques apropos to forty years earlier, including the use of a pony to pull the underground coal cars. The human element predominates as the miners react to the impending closing.

  • My grandfather died in this mine on Christmas day in, I think, 1930 when a portion of the roof caved in. Many years later, when I was growing up, we would take some mine ponies to care for in the summer because the mine was closed in the summers by then. Their names were Cyclone and Tony.

  • Preziosa testimonianza della dura vita condotta da minatori e pony nelle miniere.

  • I wonder if there is enough shale left in the Iowa coal mines to convert the shale to oil?
