@s40er1733 Well I had to give up on that helix because I just could not make it work, in order to make a 90 turn out of the helix I had to use a crossing which limited me to 8’ max train. I’m now working on a 20”R helix to use on another section of my layout. I’m almost done and hope to have my own test video next week.

@litvak54 thanks, the helix is actually three helix's in one. There is an inner loop from the bottom hidden staging up 13 turns to the top deck. That one is approx 125' and split into 5 blocks. 2nd is an outer loop from staging up 4 turns to the main level and is split into 2 blocks. Finally a 3rd outer loop that completes 9 turns up to connect the main and upper decks and is split into 3 blocks. Each block is wired to a Digitrax BDL 168 for detection and future computer control.

Well that was exciting... :/
Looks great!. I'm in the middle of building a helix for my N scale and looking for ideas. Do you happen to know what your grade is. I've been trying to get mine under 2%, but find that its almost impossible with such a small foot print

@JohnnyNCindy this helix is a 3' x 4' oval with the outer track having about 16.75" radius. The elevation between levels is 2.25" I believe when I did the math it came out to a 1.86% grade. In testing I found that 9 cars per Atlas GP-38 / 40 was about the comfort limit before there was visible slippage. So if your not running double stack or tall cars, maybe you can lower the distance between levels to help with the grade.

@s40er1733 Thanks for the info and thanks for sharing. I’ve only just started mine and I’m having 2nd thoughts. My single track is 46” x 31” to track centers with 7 loops and my elevation between levels is 2” which means 1/4” plywood and no roadbed to have enough clearance for a 1.8% grade. Unfortunately I’m a little concerned about the clearance and it will mean an increase in grade to well over that. I was told that I would need at least 20”R curves to run longer trains on the much of a grade.

@JohnnyNCindy, how long do you see your average train being and of what era car, because (30) 40' boxcars are a lot different than (15) 89' auto racks?
