@Shaku4Shintai If you are far away enough that you can survive heat and blast unprotected, prompt radiation is quite negligible; especially true for large weapons.
Fallout is dust and debris that has been sucked up into the fireball, partially molten and infused with fission products. Air bursts don't generate large particles of fallout; so the fallout is lofted with the fireball and spread out over large areas; much of it decays before comming back down. In ground bursts, you stay down wind.

Wow; this is incredible footage; I have seen some of this footage, but not this much. No sound? The yield of this was classified, but it was thought to be about 1 megaton. The missile actually veered off course at one point, causing a moment of great anxiety for the crew on the sub, but it righted itself and detonated on target. What a sight to see!!How I would love to have seen one of these tests:)

y'kno, i never realized that the US tested so many nuclear devices, but so many ppl just walked right in just a little bit after the explosion, or just watched from a not so far distance, even after worries of radiation poisoning. Wats up w/ this?
