(1/3) This is a compilation of all of the Lily Tomlin/Tom Waits scenes from 1993 Robert Altman film Shortcuts. A friend made me watch this film about six years ago because she's a Robert Downey Jr. fan, but the only storyline that had any effect on me was this one. I particularly found the scene where Earl comes into the diner distraught after spending the night without his wife to be very moving. I think that Earl and Doreen have the most satisfying ending—they're still flawed, but devoted to each other. Also, this is the movie that made me a Tom Waits fan! After I fell in love with his music, I re-watched this film and choked up when they say to each other, "'Til the wheels come off," just like in Waits's ballad "Picture in a Frame" from his Mule Variations album.

I don't own the rights to this—it's just my attempt at using movie-editing software, so I hope I don't offend anyone.

  • He's so talented in such a strange way, what would happen if he didnt have that voice? oh no...

  • Even without the voice, he would still be delightfully eccentric. :) You should listen to his first two albums, when he hadn't quite developed "that" voice yet. The songs are simpler than his later work, but still great.

  • "Doreen, Doreen: the question queen...": one of my fave lines of the whole film! Waits is also good in "Wristcutters". I was lucky enough to see Tomlin live in 1986!! Even have her autograph but didn't get to meet her.

  • it's struck me how obvious it is that the kid is NOWHERE NEAR the car in the collision scene

  • Holy crap... He looks like he can just strut right on the set of Reservoir Dogs with that suit on. :D

  • Tom Waits sounds just like Nick Nolte in the scene where he gets angry at Lily Tomlin the end of this video compilation.

  • I still can't believe that that is the same woman behind the voice of Ms. Frizzle :D

  • Aww, missed opportunity at 2:50...when Tomlin asks him what he's gonna order, Tom should've broken into "Eggs and Sausage."

  • I can hardly here the movie even with my volume turned all the way up ):

  • So, I am asking this again. What is the song the woman is singing at the beginning of this clip?! it's so gooooood!!!!!!! & Tom Waits has the best hair EVER and I have seen DOWN BY LAW and am gettin' it on DVD! Great movie! Check him out at the beginning of Roberto Benigni's "El Tigre De LA Neige". Touching scene, beautiful song "You Can Never Hold Back Spring".

  • @Twoey2E I agree. I love all of his music. He is just talented - period. No catch.

  • loved this movie. Long but rich.
