My youngest daughter Emily was home from school on May 26th, she had been quite ill with a fever earlier in the week, and seemed unusually tired and withdrawn. She had complained of a horrible headache the night before, I was begining to get a strange feeling in the pit of my stomach - but I reasoned that if she still seemed unwell later that night I would take her to see a doctor. We never made it to that point. Approx. 3:45 I heard a strange rythmic sound coming from her room - I was horrifed to find her in the battle of a tonic clonic seizure, I called 911....this began a two month battle for her life, she quickly went into status - a seizure that that does not stop. Emily almost seized continually for 3 weeks, throughout this she had involved countless tests, a brain biopsy, collpased lungs, and pancreatitis ....finally a rarely used drug was tried - Lidocaine to stop her seizing. It worked...Emily survived - but had sufffered seveare brain damage. Emily has been out of the ICU for almost 3 months - she is doing amazing, she has already defied all odds - and is continuing to improve. This is a video about this journey, from her mothers perspective. I plan on working on a documentary that will be more detailed, and continue to show how courageous and strong she has been - also I want to show how this has affected my family as a whole, her two older sisters, Laura (12) and Kayla (10) have been witness to this whole process since the beginning, and have been instrumental in helping Emily recover. My husband has also been extremely involved. Emily is starting to talk more, and stood up a few days ago. I can't begin to imagine the sense of closer that will begin when she returns home. Thanks for taking the time to watch. kara

  • I cannot believe how many views this video has gotten, I will be making another video soon...and my plans are to make a documentary that follows emily's progress...it has been a challenge to have her home, her sisters have been very supportive, and her father...but it still tears at my heart...there is alot of progress to be made. I know she can do it, she is incredible.

  • It is now almost the end of October, and emily is doing fantastic! she will be having her trach removed before to long, and she should be allowed to go on passes after that. It is a very exciting time, its been 5 months today (october 26th) that she will be in the hospital....its time for her to come home.
