Bob Dylan - Lay Down Your Weary Tune, Lyrics in description :
"Lay down your weary tune, lay down
Lay down the song you strum
And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings
No voice can hope to hum

Struck by the sounds before the sun
I knew the night had gone
The morning breeze like a bugle blew
Against the drums of dawn

Lay down your weary tune, lay down
Lay down the song you strum
And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings
No voice can hope to hum

The ocean wild like an organ played
The seaweed's wove its strands
The crashin' waves like cymbals clashed
Against the rocks and sands

Lay down your weary tune, lay down
Lay down the song you strum
And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings
No voice can hope to hum

I stood unwound beneath the skies
And clouds unbound by laws
The cryin' rain like a trumpet sang
And asked for no applause

Lay down your weary tune, lay down
Lay down the song you strum
And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings
No voice can hope to hum

The last of leaves fell from the trees
And clung to a new love's breast
The branches bare like a banjo played
To the winds that listened best

I gazed down in the river's mirror
And watched its winding strum
The water smooth ran like a hymn
And like a harp did hum

Lay down your weary tune, lay down
Lay down the song you strum
And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings
No voice can hope to hum"

  • A stunning song. Only Dylan could write a genuine masterpiece and fail to release it.

  • So beautiful. No one will come close to his genius......no one ever.

  • This was meant to be on The Times They Are a-Changin', but he refrained from using it because he felt it would "break the mood of the album". Shame it is, because this song is absolutely beautiful.

  • @cutthecrapalready Dylan is a genius in his field, He's not in competition with Shakespeare, he writes songs, not poems (or plays).

  • One of the most brilliant Dylan tunes, especially the music related metaphors in the lyrics. It was recently(Feb. 19,2012) sang at the Warren Hellman (Hardly Strickly Bluegrass benefactor) Memorial by his granddaughter and the Wronglers, a perfect eulogy for Hellman. One correction on the lyrics that were printed in this post, the line should be "The branches bare like a banjo moaned" not "Banjo played".

  • @Jolene1959 Figurse his Jewish.. you know God's chosen people... hurkhurk

  • the somehow calmed passion in his voice is beautiful

  • He has written countless masterpieces and his ever changing face and voice have kept me holding on to solid rock forever. Even my kids love this song (which is a miracle).

Thrilling love this track so much.
